With some of the best landscapes in the country and a fantastic choice of public footpaths, the best way to see the glorious countryside of Kent and Sussex that surrounds Royal Tunbridge Wells is on foot.
Take in a slice of cricket history The Nevill Ground is a cricket ground located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, just a short walk from the centre of town. Opened in 1898, the ground regularly hosted Kent County Cricket Club first-class matches, as the county’s second home ground. Most notably, the ground hosted a single One-Day International (ODI) during the 1983 Cricket World Cup, which went on to be one of the most notable matches in Indian cricket history. More recently it has been used for one match during the 1993 Women’s Cricket World Cup. Today, it is the home ground of Tunbridge Wells Cricket Club. The Cricket World Cup in Tunbridge Wells The 1983 Cricket World Cup took place in England with organisers choosing to host matches across the many counties of England. The Nevill Ground, as one of Kent’s county grounds, was chosen to host a group stage match between India and Zimbabwe. The match went on to be not only pivotal in India’s World Cup campaign, but a turning point in Indian cricket history. On 18 June 1983, during a One Day International at the Nevill Ground, India elected to bat first but quickly collapsed to 17 for 5. Their captain, Kapil Dev, then produced one of the greatest innings in ODI history, scoring an unbeaten 175 from 138 balls. Supported by Syed Kirmani in a ninth-wicket partnership worth 126 runs, he guided India to a remarkable total of 266/8. India went on to win the match by 31 runs, a result that proved pivotal to their World Cup campaign. The victory kept their hopes alive and set them on course to defeat the West Indies in the final at Lord's, securing India's first Cricket World Cup title. For many Indian cricket fans, the Nevill Ground is therefore far more than a picturesque county venue – it is the place where India's 1983 World Cup dream was rescued and cricket history was changed. Following their World Cup win, there was a surge in cricket’s popularity across the country and the match is often cited as the single most important innings in Indian cricket history. On the big screen The match, and especially Kapil Dev's 175*, was adapted into film in the 2021 movie ‘83’, directed by Kabir Khan and starring Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev. The film tells the story of India's entire 1983 World Cup campaign, culminating in the victory over the West Indies. Much of the Tunbridge Wells sequence was filmed at the Nevill Ground. How to visit The Nevill Ground The Nevill Ground welcomes visitors to explore the grounds. Open daily, during daylight hours, it is free to enter. During the cricket season (April to September) on match days and training days the bar is usually open for visitors who are very welcome to have a drink and take in the ground. The Nevill [...]
